A Metastasis to the Nasal Tip from a Cervical Carcinoma. A Cace Report.

Abstract: Metastases to the nasal tip from gynecological malignancies are extremely rare. We present a case of a tumor metastatic to the nasal tip from a carcinoma of the uterine cervix. We administered high-dose focal irradiation to the site of the tumor. The literature on metastases to the nose, maxillary sinuses, and paranasal sinuses from gynecologic malignancies is reviewed.

“…Another possible mechanism of nasal tip metastasis is that when the intrathoracic pressure is greatly increased, blood-borne emboli pass through venous plexi and drift upwards to the venous sinuses of the skull. The pterygoid plexus, cavernous sinus, and pharyngeal plexus communicate with the vertebral system, and may transport tumour cells to the nose (27) In conclusion, when dermatologist encounters a tumour on the nose of a patient, with or without known internal cancer, cutaneous metastasis may be considered as one of the differential diagnoses and should be investigated by skin biopsy.…”

“…Tumor emboli may enter the pulmonary vein, then the systemic circulation through the left atrium, and enter the cavernous body into the blood supply site. Another possible mechanism of nasal tip metastasis is that when the intrathoracic pressure increases significantly, blood-borne emboli drift upward through the venous plexus to the venous sinuses of the skull ( 20 ). However, the specific mechanism needs to be further clarified.…”

“…Its spread may occur via the pulmonary vascular and lymphatic routes, the vertebral plexus, the arterial embolus and the venous sinuses of the skull which on communication with the vertebral system metastasize the tumour cells to the nose. 12,13 Patient of internal malignancies presenting with cutaneous metastasis have poor prognosis with life expectancy of about 3-5 months. [14-16] 14,15 Nasal tip skin metastasis are also reported in literature from malignancies of thyroid, hypopharynx, esophagus, chordoma and leukemia.…”
