A metagenomic study of the microbial communities in four parallel biogas reactors

Abstract: BackgroundBiogas is a renewable energy carrier which is used for heat and power production or, in the form of purified methane, as a vehicle fuel. The formation of methane from organic materials is carried out by a mixed microbial community under anaerobic conditions. However, details about the microbes involved and their function are limited. In this study we compare the metagenomes of four parallel biogas reactors digesting a protein-rich substrate, relate microbiology to biogas performance, and observe diff… Show more

“…has been found as part of the core microbial community of mesophilic anaerobic digester fed either by animal manure, food waste or by both in a co‐digestion process . It also was found as one of the most common Firmicutes taxa found in four parallel digesters operating under protein‐rich substrate addiction in the feed with stable productivity . Moreover Dethiobacter spp.…”

“…Thus far, a number of studies have investigated the metagenomes of anaerobic digestion in laboratory-scale [33][34][35][36] and full-scale systems [37][38][39][40][41]. Since earlier metagenomic studies mostly employed the 454 Life Sciences platform, the sequencing depth achieved was relatively shallow compared to the higher throughput illumina platforms.…”

“…Syntrophic bacteria or anaerobic fungi partners of methanogens are difficult to cultivate and to study without their product-consuming associate. Modern characterization is typically initiated by genome or metagenome analysis, possibly leading to insights about special requirements that allow cultivation of pure isolates and studying their special physiological performances [10][11][12].…”
