A Meta-Surface Antenna Array Decoupling (MAAD) Design to Improve the Isolation Performance in a MIMO System

Abstract: In this paper, a design to reduce the mutual coupling between two closely MIMO antennas is presented. A metasurface superstrate consisting of periodic circular split ring resonator (CSRR) elements is placed above the coupled two-element patch antennas to improve the isolation performance. The propagation of the electromagnetic wave from antenna 1 to antenna 2 causing mutual coupling will be blocked since the loading of metasurface, which can be considered as a negative-permeability medium. First, the size of t… Show more

“…To achieve in-band decoupling (IBD), it is intuitive to insert a band-stop FSS wall between antennas, 16,17 or arrange a single-negative metasurface above antennas. [18][19][20][21] Besides, over-the-air coupling can be canceled out by loading antenna decoupling surface (ADS), 22,23 dielectric superstrate [24][25][26][27][28] or parasitic structures, 29 since they introduce an additional coupling path with equal magnitude and opposite phase.…”

“…Besides the techniques, mentioned in Table 1, we can observe that Frequency Selective Surface (FSS) (Huang, 2020) and Metasurface (F. Liu et al., 2020; Z. Wang et al., 2020; Yin et al., 2020) are also sometimes useful in suppressing MC along with their many others advantages.…”

“…On the one hand, to fulfil the performance requirements imposed by the needs pertinent to specific application areas, antenna structures have to implement additional functionalities (multi-band operation 13 , tunability 14 , circular polarization 15 ), but also offer improved characteristics (high gain 16 , broadband operation 17 , high element isolation in MIMO systems 18 , etc.). This requires incorporation of a variety of geometrical alterations (stubs 19 , slots 20 , defected ground structures 21 , metamaterial-based components 22 ), which makes the designs increasingly sophisticated and described by large numbers of parameters. Also, the use of full-wave electromagnetic (EM) simulation tools is instrumental in ensuring evaluation reliability.…”
