A meta-analysis of the relationship between climate change experience and climate change perception

Abstract: Will climate change experience shape people’s climate change perception? To examine the evidences, we performed a pre-registered meta-analysis using data from 302 studies, covering 351,378 observations. Our results find that climate change experience only has a weak positive correlation with climate change awareness in general (r = 0.098, 95% CI 0.0614, 0.1348), and the effect sizes vary considerably across different climate events. General hazard and temperature anomalies experiences have significant correlat… Show more

“…This shift in focus highlights the increasing concern among researchers regarding farmers' ability to maintain food security and adapt to climate change challenges. Future research directions may include exploring the impacts of heavy metal pollution on farmers and gaining further insights into their perspectives and strategies for coping with climate change [74]. Additionally, research in this field may continue to investigate the barriers hindering the widespread adoption of adaptation strategies by farmers [75].…”

“…To estimate climate change perception in China, we used a statistical method called multilevel regression and poststrati cation (MRP) 1,2 . This method is a form of survey weighting that allows researchers to make inferences about population-level characteristics based on a sample of respondents.…”

“…This analysis, distinct from our MRP estimation, focused on natural, demographic, and socioeconomic features at the city level rather than individual-level predictors used in MRP model. We chose in uencing factors based on their relevance in affecting people's experience and understanding of climate change reported in previous literature [1][2][3][18][19][20] . Here, we present those factors which were found to have a signi cant impact.…”

“…One idea that has captured scholarly attention in recent years is that experience with extreme weather might translate into increased engagement with the issue of climate change (e.g., Borick & Rabe, 2017). Yet, extreme weather experience has only a weak relationship with climate change perception, and several factors affect this relationship (Xia et al, 2022). For instance, the relationship of extreme weather experience with climate change engagement depends in part on whether people arrive at a personal understanding-or subjective attribution-that extreme weather is a result of climate change (Marlon et al, 2019;van der Linden, 2016).…”
