A Meta-Analysis of the Relations Between Three Types of Peer Norms and Adolescent Sexual Behavior

Abstract: The aim of the present meta-analysis was to investigate the associations between three types of peer norms–descriptive norms (peer sexual behaviors), injunctive norms (peer sexual attitudes), and peer pressure to have sex–and two adolescent sexual behavior outcomes (sexual activity and sexual risk behavior). Adolescent sexual activity was more strongly associated with descriptive norms (ESrfixed = .40) than with injunctive norms (ESrfixed = .22) or peer pressure (ESrfixed = .10). Compared with the sexual activ… Show more

“…Sheeran and Taylor's (1999) meta-analysis also showed medium to strong average correlations among condom use attitudes, norms, behavioral control, and actual condom intentions and condom use. “…Another approach focuses on social norms within the peer group, sometimes drawing a distinction between descriptive norms, injunctive norms, and active peer pressure (van de Bongardt, Reitz, Sandfort, and Dekovic, 2014). The most consistent finding in the literature on adolescent sexual activity in the United States is the strong statistical association between adolescents’ self-reported sexual initiation and their perceptions about the sexual activity of their close friends (e.g., Billy and Udry, 1985; Bersamin Walker, Fisher, and Grube, 2006; Rai et al, 2003; Romer et al, 2004).…”

“…This has been demonstrated across many areas of public health such as diet, 11,12 alcohol use, 13,14 and risky sexual behaviors. 15,16 Understanding significant determinants of social norms, specifically injunctive and descriptive norms, will help researchers and practitioners design effective health behavior change interventions and health communication strategies that rely on changing social norms. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the difference between value-expectancy and expectancy-only-based determinants of injunctive and descriptive norms across a case series of health behaviors.…”
