The article reveals some approaches to the interpretation of the concept of the cognitive component of mathematical competence, reveals some ways of forming the cognitive component of mathematical competence of students of technical specialties. Based on the analysis of literature sources, the purpose and objectives of the study, the research hypothesis are substantiated. The purpose of the study is to check the effectiveness of the proposed method of improving the level of mathematical training of students of technical specialties (STS) in the form of checking the formation of the cognitive component of mathematical competence of STS. The method of improving the level of mathematical preparation consists in its fundamentalization. The paper also presents a statistical verification of the reliability of the obtained results. The methodological apparatus of the research covered modern principles and approaches of higher school pedagogy. The main approaches to improving the quality of mathematical training through its fundamentalization include: synergistic, systemic, activity, competence, knowledge-activity, personality-oriented; teaching and research approach. Also, the idea of forming professionally oriented mathematical competence is substantiated in the work. The work describes the structural scheme of the concepts of the proposed methodological system for improving the mathematical training of students of technical specialties through its fundamentalization. The obtained results of the study clearly confirm the effectiveness of the proposed concept of improving the quality of mathematical training of STS, and confirm the impact on improving the cognitive component of mathematical competence. The obtained results of the study indicate the need for further development in order to improve the quality and level of mathematical preparation of STS.

PBL has become a popular topic in educational research studies. Several studies examine the effect of PBL toward students’ mathematical connection abilities. A total of 8 articles qualified for inclusion. This study analyzed them using Meta Analysis with the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) application by selecting the Hedge’s equation to determine its effect size and bias publication was assessed by the funnel plot, and Rosenthal’s fail-safe N (FSN) test. Based on the analysis result, the overall effect size is 0.797 according to random-effect model with a 95% confidence interval (CI). It was classified as a moderate level. The findings of the study showed that the overall implementation of PBL had a larger positive effect significantly compared to conventional learning on the students’ mathematical connection’s ability. Because, in the implementation of the PBL model, students are faced with problems that are closely related to everyday life. This shows that mathematical connection ability is needed one of which is the aspects of the connection between mathematics and daily life. Doing this research can support the development of learning and can be an alternative learning model to improving students’ mathematical connections ability.

Focusing on grade 7 teachers, the study explores strategies to enhance integers' teaching-learning competency, revealing nuanced approaches employed by three teachers. Through qualitative methods, specifically in-depth interviews, the research uses an exploratory approach to unravel the underlying strategies shaping the teaching of integers. Key findings underscore integers as a formidable learning competency for grade 7 students, particularly in operations like addition and subtraction. The most effective pedagogical approach, encapsulated in the 3Rs — Reaching, Representing, Recommending — involves drill exercises for foundational concepts, integrating manipulatives like algebra tiles and coloured tiles, and advocating for continuous manipulative use with persistent drill exercises and integrating technology. These identified themes emphasize the need for a uniform understanding among teachers during discussions to ensure a cohesive and effective teaching strategy. Recognizing these strategies is crucial for addressing the existing learning gap and advancing grade 7 students' competency in dealing with integers. The research contributes valuable insights to the academic discourse, offering effective pedagogical practices and fostering a more robust foundation for mathematical understanding at the middle school level.
