A Meta-Analysis of Studies of Treatments for Feline Urine Spraying

Abstract: Feline urine spraying inside the home is a common problem behaviour that owners seek advice for from veterinarians. Individual trials relating to a variety of interventions produce variable results, and to date, no consensus on the value of different treatments has emerged. This study therefore aimed to meta-analyse, current data from appropriate published clinical trials that evaluate treatments for feline urine spraying.Inclusion and exclusion criteria for study selection were predefined and methodological q… Show more

“…Therefore, a small number of included studies for some geographic regions might influence the results, such as Africa in our analysis. In practice, this is also the case in other subgroup metaanalyses (63). Therefore, a larger sample size will be needed to validate this assumption in future studies.…”

“…Feliway TM , a derivative of Feline Facial Pheromone (Ceva Animal Health, Lenexa, KS), has been shown to reduce urine marking, aggression, and fear in domestic cats when administered in spray and diffuser forms (Gunn-Moore & Cameron, 2004;Mills & Mills, 2001;Ogata & Takeuchi, 2001). However, these studies have had variable success rates and sprays require daily reapplication (GunnMoore & Cameron, 2004;Mills, Redgate, & Landsberg, 2011). Additionally, Feliway TM increased urine spraying in some multicat households; therefore, investigation of more effective pheromonal treatments is warranted (Mills et al, 2011).…”
