A Meta-Analysis of How Country-Level Factors Affect Web Survey Response Rates

Abstract: A major challenge in web-based cross-cultural data collection is varying response rates, which can result in low data quality and non-response bias. Country-specific factors such as the political and demographic, economic, and technological factors as well as the socio-cultural environment may have an effect on the response rates to web surveys. This study evaluates web survey response rates using meta-analytical methods based on 110 experimental studies from seven countries. Three dependent variables, so-call… Show more

“…First, the low response rate of the practitioners may affect the representativeness of the final sample. Nevertheless, the response rate found for the practitioners of this study was close to the rates that have been found for web surveys in different cultures 43 . Second, the outcomes of this study were obtained through self‐reports.…”

“…Nevertheless, the response rate found for the practitioners of this study was close to the rates that have been found for web surveys in different cultures. 43 Second, the outcomes of this study were obtained through self-reports. These constitute a useful but imperfect approximation to the behaviours of interest, as they can be affected by different response biases such as recall bias and social desirability bias.…”

“…This response rate is not different from other electronic survey studies but indicates a future potential to obtain a more robust sample. 39 Next, the responses were primarily benchmarked against CDC or USPTF recommendations, whereby other health agencies may provide different recommendations. Furthermore, the strength of preventive screening recommendations for colorectal or breast cancer is varied and subject to provider and/or patient interpretation of risks.…”

“…It is also possible that viewing the images online may have been tedious compared to a paper survey and there was less participation as they continued the sur-vey. Daikeler et al (2022) analyzed 110 online studies on web-based surveys and found that while web surveys can be reliable and have a relatively high response rate, the webbased survey response rate was lower than the rates of other survey modes.…”
