“…CCDSS have been shown to be effective in increasing preventive screening, specifically for mammography and in the diagnosis and treatment monitoring of diseases. [60][61][62][63] A variety of studies have assessed CCDSS ability to decrease use of diagnostic testing, but additional research is needed to assess its ability to decrease the use of extra screening tests, particularly via non-recommended modalities. 60,62,64 Features of effective CCDSS include providing advice to patients in addition to providers and requiring providers to note reasons for over-riding advice.…”

“…9 Improved adherence to recommended care processes has been demonstrated using different types of computerized reminders. 7,8 One large randomized trial demonstrated improvements in resident compliance with multiple care standards using a registry-generated computerized reminder system that provided physician reminders coordinated with patients' appointments. 7 In contrast to our study, this intervention did not include performance feedback or patient reminders.…”

“…[21][22][23][24]40 Although not without limitation, 41,42 clinical decision support systems have been used to implement evidence-based practices across multiple conditions, [43][44][45][46][47][48][49] and many of these systems are being developed to be shareable across multiple healthcare systems, 50 especially in the U.S. in response to healthcare reform. Findings from the present and prior studies in VA suggest that while VA's alcohol screening clinical reminder has effectively prompted clinical staff to conduct screening and facilitated documentation that screening occurred, 9 it has not facilitated screening in a validated, standardized, reproducible way.…”
