A Medium Frequency Transformer Design Tool with Methodologies Adapted to Various Structures

Abstract: A comprehensive and generic medium frequency transformer (MFT) design methodology is presented in this paper, which can be applied to many transformer structures. Models were found or developed to cover all the necessary calculation, with emphasis on the balance between computation time and accuracy, leading to a fast and efficient design tool. Numerous MFT designs are available at the end with the possibility to choose the best candidate. A multi-megawatt offshore windfarm converter application was chosen to … Show more

“…The voltage and current waveforms in the inductor at the operating point where the peak current is the highest have been used as the worst-case scenario to design the inductor. The design is done using the tool to size magnetic components developed in [10].…”

“…As an accurate electric field calculation usually needs relatively slow FEM simulations, this becomes a bottleneck in the optimization routine. Therefore, converter optimization procedures often use rather rough approximations for the insulation modeling [2], [6]- [8], which could result in an oversized transformer design or, in worst case, in a breakdown. Especially for modular medium voltage transformer topologies, as given in [7], an accurate insulation design is crucial, since in such systems the secondary side often has to isolate a high (DC) offset voltage.…”
