“…There are also hundreds of studies of oxidative stress responses to low intensity field exposures, which can also be produced by downstream effects of increased [Ca2+]i (1-3). The mode of microwave action via VGCC activation also confirms earlier predictions of Panagopoulos et al (7,8) that EMFs may act via voltage-gated ion channel activation. The whole issue of the biophysics of VGCCs and other voltagegated ion channels is discussed in some detail below.…”

“…I believe it is likely that W.R. Adey was influenced by the plasma membrane properties when in the 1980s he proposed that a plasma membrane protein was the likely target of weak EMFs. Panagopoulos et al (7,8) may have been influenced by these plasma membrane and voltage sensor considerations when they decided to do biophysical modeling on voltage gated ion channels. The two reviewers of this paper each had some criticisms of the Panagopoulos et al (7,8) modeling, and some of the things in their papers go beyond my biophysics understanding, so I am unable to judge.…”

“…The present model, indeed inspired by the OHC, shares similar properties as a physical membrane embedded in viscoelastic surroundings that also functions as a mechanical amplifier at characteristic (resonant) frequencies [40,[63][64][65][66][67][68][69]. In this context, the dimensional power dissipation is given by the following expression:…”

“…Electrical fields can affect multiple systems within cells, changing local membrane potential, position and conformation of proteins [Jaffe, 1977;Poo and Robinson, 1977] in the membranes, and ion flux across the plasma membrane [Panagopoulos et al, 2000;Thompson et al, 2000]. Previous work on the effect of electrical fields on wound healing has focused on the direct application of DC fields on the migration of single cells [Weninger et al, 2000] or monolayers [Cha et al, 1996] on simple matrices, providing data on the mechanisms involved in the stimulation and maintenance of migration.…”
