Learning and memory abilities tend to decline as people age. The current study examines the question of whether a learning situation that emphasizes collaborative social interaction might help older persons overcome age-related learning and memory changes and thus perform similarly to younger persons. Younger and Older participants (n = 34 in each group) completed the Barrier Task, a game-like social interaction where partners work together to develop labels for a set of abstract tangrams. Participants were also administered standard clinical neuropsychological measures of memory, on which the Older group showed expected inferiority to the Younger group. On the Barrier Task, the Older group performed less well than the Younger group early on, but as the task progressed, the performance of the Older group caught up and became statistically indistinguishable from that of the Younger group. These results can be taken to suggest that a learning milieu characterized by collaborative social interaction can attenuate some of the typical memory disadvantages associated with being older.

When orphanages are the only means of survival for war orphans, a group setting where the staff shares in the responsibilities of child management, is sensitive to the individuality of the children, and establishes stable personal ties with the children serves the emotional needs and psychological development of the orphans more effectively than a group setting that attempts to create a secure environment through an authoritative style of management with explicit rules and well-defined schedules.

We address explanatory issues raised by prior ® ndings on the prosody-voice characteristics of suspected apraxia of speech in children (AOSc ). Prosodyvoice patterns for 14 adults with apraxia of speech (AOS ) were compared to the prosody-voice patterns of 14 children with suspected apraxia of speech and inappropriate stress (AOSci) using the same assessment instruments and analysis methods. Compared to the speakers with AOSci, speakers with AOS had signi® cantly fewer utterances meeting criteria for inappropriate stress, and signi® cantly more utterances meeting criteria for inappropriate phrasing and inappropriate rate of speech. Discussion focuses on the implications of these three dissociations for the psycholinguistic locus of the stress de® cit in AOSci including candidate loci within linguistic, motor speech, and self-monitoring processes.
