A Mathematical Formula to Estimate In Vivo Thyroid Volume from Two-Dimensional Ultrasonography

Abstract: This study shows that 2D-US does not provide an accurate estimation of TV and suggests that it can be improved by a mathematical model different from the ellipsoid model. If confirmed in prospective studies, this may contribute to a more appropriate management of thyroid diseases.

“…In this context, it has to be mentioned that the World Heath Organization (WHO) and the International Council for the Control of Iodine Defi ciency Disorders (ICCIDD) consider US the diagnostic method of choice for goiter assessment ( World Health Organization 1994 ). Furthermore, thyroid examination by US represents a common in-offi ce method for endocrinologists in diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of many diseases, such as goiter, nodules and autoimmune diseases ( Brunn et al, 1981, Trimboli et al, 2008, Vitti and Rago 2003. Some studies have demonstrated the high accuracy of hypoechogenicity of the thyroid gland in predicting hypofunction and Hashimoto ' s thyroiditis ( Marcocci et al, 1991, Rago et al, 2001 ).…”

“…In addition, ultrasound has become the accepted method for estimating thyroid size, using the ellipsoid volume formula. As a consequence, US is an essential instrument for the management of many thyroid diseases, such as goitre, nodules and autoimmune diseases [11][12][13]. Despite this, thyroid echographic appearance has rarely been analyzed with relation to thyroid laboratory assessment.…”

“…In human patients, the most common method for calculating thyroid volume is based on the equation for an ellipsoid (4/3 πabc, where a , b , and c are the three elliptic radii of the height, width, and depth of each lobe) . Indeed, the American Thyroid Association has an on‐line calculator that uses this equation.…”
