A major QTL associated with preharvest sprouting in rapeseed (Brassica napus L.)

Abstract: Preharvest sprouting (PHS) is one of the most important factors affecting the cereal production worldwide, in regions characterized by rainfall and high humidity during harvest season. It is sometimes a problem in rapeseed (Brassica napus L.), especially in production of commercial F 1 hybrids. To detect quantitative trait loci (QTL) controlling PHS, a F 2 population consisting of 269 F 2:3 lines was created from the cross between a PHS-tolerant line (117AB) and a PHS-susceptible line (7,605). A linkage map wa… Show more

“…Together, this indicates that at least for this locus there is no negative pleiotropic effect of the yellow seed color alleles on pre-harvest germination. Previously, another major QTL for preharvest germination was identified on chromosome N11 of B. napus (Feng et al (2009). In the present work only a slight negative and no correlation between ADLm content and pre-harvest germination was found for the first and second population, respectively, which is in support of an independent inheritance of this trait from reduced lignin content.…”

“…Vivipary (pre-harvest sprouting) is another important oilseed quality trait. A major QTL explaining 50.8% of the total variance for vivipary had previously been mapped to chromosome N11 of B. napus (Feng et al, 2009 ). We are not aware of previous work on seed vivipary QTLs in B. rapa .…”

“…The genetic control of preharvest sprouting or vivipary is a very important trait in many cereals and oilseed rape breeding programmes. QTL studies reported the identification of responsible gene/QTLs in other crop species for seed dormancy/preharvest sprouting (PHS) (rapeseed, rice, Arabidopsis, wheat, barley and sorghum)(Feng et al 2009, Bent-Fig. 2: Continued sink et al 2010,Marzougui et al 2012, Schatzki et al 2013, Cabral et al 2014).…”
