A Major Advancement in Expandable Connection Performance, Enabling Reliable Gastight Expandable Connections

Abstract: Summary Since the introduction almost 15 years ago of today's solid-expandable-liner systems, threaded-connection technologies have advanced very little compared with the development of sophisticated, state-of-the-art expansion tools and systems. The severity of damage caused to threaded connections during the downhole expansion process leaves some threads unengaged and badly deformed, reducing the connections’ mechanical dependability. Even worse, traditional metal seals incorporated into most … Show more

“…For tubulars with threaded connections, a nonuniform contact condition occurs at the mandrel-tubular interface. During expansion of these threaded sections of the tubular, the disengagement of threads results in additional load on adjacent threads, which in turn damages it badly resulting in lowering the dependability of threaded connections [19]. The root cause of such behavior is the axial bending, which can be significantly reduced by lowering the mandrel cone angle from a typical value of 10 to 2…”

“…Among them, finite element method has been widely used. Ishimura et al, 12 Hilbert and Bergstrom, 13 DeLange et al, 14 Chen et al, 15 and Chen et al 16 have done successful studies on sealing performance of joints by finite element method.…”

“…Over the years, casing corrosion occurs in oil and gas wells, so companies that own them are looking for ways to extend their productive lives. This is now made possible by lining the corroded casing from the inside using expandable pipes ( After its first commercial application in 1999, for more than 20 years, SET technology has achieved significant application in the oil industry (Owoeye et al, 2000;Waddell and Schuurmans, 2004;Marketz et al, 2005;Jennings, 2008;DeLange et al, 2011;Mason et al, 2011;Tao, 2015;Wold et al, 2020). The solutions currently offered by SET technology are based on extensive analytical modelling, laboratory tests and large field tests.…”
