A magneto-optical trap loaded from a pyramidal funnel

Abstract: We have demonstrated the transfer of 39 K and 40 K atoms from a magneto-optical funnel (a hollow pyramidal mirror) through a low (0:05 l/s) conductance hole and into a conventional magneto-optical trap (mot) 35 cm away, with an efficiency of approximately six percent. This simple scheme should be useful for experiments requiring high loading rates with minimal contamination from hot untrapped atoms.

“…Note here, in Figure 15 the coils are in rectangular shape but in actual literature circular coils are used. In literature [76] conical shaped hollow mirrors were used and tested [77] [76]. Pyramidal MOT give us further insight into the planar mirror-MOT configuration by adopting partially reflection mechanism, which is shown in Figure 16.…”

“…2. Our PMOT, operated with a single laser beam of <2 MHz FWHM and 100 mW power, is a version of the MOT [9] that emits a cold atomic beam through a hole in the apex of a pyramidal mirror [10]. This is similar to a Low-Velocity Intense Source of atoms (LVIS [11]).…”

“…We plan to use a pyramidal loading system [15] to inject cold atoms into the trap in the next generation apparatus. This will greatly reduce the background ion count compared to the background that results from our current method of loading from a thermal equilibrium vapor which fills the entire vacuum system.…”
