A Magnetic Approach to Treating Progressive Early‐Onset Scoliosis

Abstract: Early-onset scoliosis presents at birth and up to five years of age. Growing rods are a treatment option when early-onset scoliosis cannot be controlled by serial casts or braces. The function of a growing rod is to allow a child's spine to continue to grow under controlled conditions until a definitive correction can be made when the patient nears skeletal maturity. This article presents two case reports describing the use of an expandable magnetic growing rod in children with progressive, early-onset scolios… Show more

“…The obvious benefit of the magnetic growing rod system is that repeat operations to perform rod lengthening are avoided, which is one of the main drawbacks of growing rods [13]. This is particularly useful in patients with high risk of complications from general anaesthesia, such as respiratory tract infection [14]. Considering that the minimum follow-up of patients in our series was 23 months, it is likely that all patients would have required at least three to four further surgeries to lengthen rods if a traditional growing rod system had been used.…”

“…A total of 7 articles met the initial inclusion criteria and were fully reviewed 13,15,17,21-24. After reviewing those papers, one article was excluded, as it describes a different and not yet approved model of magnetic growing rod (GR), the custom made “Phenix rod” (Phenix Medical, Paris, France) 21.…”

“…Preliminary results indicated MCGR was safe and provided adequate distraction similar to TGR technique, and can be used as dual-rod (DR) or single-rod (SR) technique of rod construct 13,15,17,21-24. As this is a relatively new technique, figures were added to illustrate a case in which the magnetic rods were implanted ( Figures 1-4 ).…”

“…Moreover, distraction is gradual and performed at regular intervals with the child in a conscious state. The technique is promising and mid-to long-term outcomes are currently under investigation [25,26,27].…”
