A low prevalence of mycobacteria in freshwater fish from water reservoirs, ponds and farms

Abstract: A survey of the occurrence of mycobacteria was conducted from 717 freshwater fish (25 species) in two water reservoirs, five ponds and two farms in the Czech Republic. A total of 2182 tissue samples from these fish were examined using the conventional culture method. Thirteen mycobacterial isolates were obtained from 12 (1.7%) fish belonging to nine species. Isolates were identified using sequence analysis of the 16SrRNA gene as: Mycobacterium algericum, M. fortuitum, M. gordonae, M. insubricum, M. kumamotonen… Show more

“…The same paper also reported the misidentification of the strain as a member of the M. tuberculosis complex by commercial probes (AccuProbe and INNO-LiPA Mycobacteria); such a finding has not been confirmed with other strains. One isolate from fish has also been reported (77).…”

“…It is worth noting that the probability to find mycobacterial infections is higher in farmed fishes than in wild ones, as already pointed out in a recent study for several freshwater species [56]. M. chelonae is considered a human pathogen associated with infection of wound in immunocompromised person.…”

“…, Danio sp. , Colisa sp., and Trichogaster species were reported in previous studies (Marzouk et al., ; Novotny et al., ; Peterson et al., ); however, only a few studies have been related to the incidence of mycobacteria in clinically healthy fish populations (Beran et al., ; Mrlik et al., ).…”
