A Low-Cost, Ear-Contactless Electronic Stethoscope Powered by Raspberry Pi for Auscultation of Patients With COVID-19: Prototype Development and Feasibility Study

Abstract: Background Chest examination by auscultation is essential in patients with COVID-19, especially those with poor respiratory conditions, such as severe pneumonia and respiratory dysfunction, and intensive cases who are intubated and whose breathing is assisted with a ventilator. However, proper auscultation of these patients is difficult when medical workers wear personal protective equipment and when it is necessary to minimize contact with patients. Objective … Show more

“…During the COVID-19 pandemic, the value of digital technology use under extreme measures for infection control has become evident. For instance, electronic stethoscopes could be utilized for contactless auscultation with real-time playback, digital storage of data, and subsequent data transmission for further assessment [ 109 ]. With the reduction of in-person hospital visits, digital technology could facilitate telemonitoring programs to serve as alternative to support patient access to care [ 110 ].…”

“…In this study BS were recorded from COVID-19 patients at peak disease (PD) and pre-discharge from hospital (D). Acquiring BS from COVID-19 patients in a quarantine ward was easy to implement as previously reported [12] , [13] and BSR can be auscultated in real-time with the device and various analyses can be performed off-line. The VoqX TM device helps overcoming the standard auscultation limitations imposed by quarantine conditions.…”

“…However, they are more expensive than cylindrical tube stethoscopes. 14 On the other hand, a Bluetooth stethoscope requires two cycles of acoustic and electrical changes, and the sound in one’s ear is different from that of a conventional stethoscope. Its noise level is higher than that of the conventional stethoscope.…”
