A Longitudinal Study of the Presence of Dental Anomalies in the Primary and Permanent Dentitions of Cleft Lip and/or Palate Patients

Abstract: The prevalence of hypodontia was greater in permanent dentition than in primary dentition; although, it was not much different between males and females or between the right and left sides. The prevalence of dental anomalies was significantly different among four groups by cleft type: cleft lip, cleft lip and alveolus, cleft lip and palate, and cleft palate.

“…Teeth suffering from such problems tend to show malformation as well as malposition. The bone support of teeth adjacent to the cleft is generally compromised (Moore and Mc Cord, 2004;Suzuki et al, 2017;Vig and Mercado, 2015;Tome et al, 2016). However, in recent years, alveolar distraction treatment have been applied to close this area, but there is limited indication for this procedures.…”

“…It is important for the cleft patients to have good prosthodontic treatment where prosthodontics treatment is counted as a retention protocol as well. Even though, the ideal treatment of the cleft area is closing it by bone graft and orthodontics, many cases are rehabilitated with a variety of prosthetic appliances (Bartzella et al, 2010;Freitas et al, 2012Freitas et al, , 2013Shaw et al, 2001;Suzuki et al, 2017;Vig and Mercado, 2015;Tome et al, 2016;Moore and Mc Cord, 2004).…”

“…Tooth agenesis (TA) is one of the most common developmental anomalies in humans, characterized by the failure to develop one or more teeth. The permanent dentition is more frequently affected than primary dentition (Suzuki et al, ). TA can occur as a phenotype in more than 150 syndromes (Yin & Bian, ), which is defined as syndromic TA, such as non‐lethal Raine syndrome and HATS syndrome (Acevedo et al, ; Alshaiji, Handler, Huo, Freedman, & Schachner, ), or in an isolated condition without other structural anomalies, which is called non‐syndromic tooth agenesis (NSTA).…”
