A Longitudinal Study of 25-Hydroxy Vitamin D and Parathyroid Hormone Status throughout Pregnancy and Exclusive Lactation in New Zealand Mothers and Their Infants at 45° S

Abstract: Vitamin D status and associated metabolism during pregnancy and lactation have been assessed in only a limited number of longitudinal studies, all from the northern hemisphere, with no infant data concurrently reported. Therefore, we aimed to describe longitudinal maternal and infant 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25OHD) and parathyroid hormone (PTH) status during pregnancy and up to 5 months postnatal age, in New Zealand women and their infants living at 45° S latitude. Between September 2011 and June 2013, 126 pregna… Show more

“…The 25OHD content of breast milk is dependent on 25OHD status of the mother [ 7 ]. Many studies have shown that majority of the pregnant and lactating mothers have less than recommended 25OHD levels [ 8 , 9 ]. The vD deficiency is rampant in womenfolk of south Asia(75-99%) where it is not expected due to ample sun exposure and lower altitude that stimulate cutaneous 25OHD synthesis [ 9 , 10 ].…”

“…Recently, Al-Ajlan et al (34) detected VDD (< 50 nmol/l) in about 82.5% of 515 pregnant Saudi women during the 147 1 st trimester. Also, Krieger et al (35) detected 53.4% prevalence of VDD in their sample of pregnant women in Switzerland and Wheeler et al (36) documented that VDD in women in New Zealand is very common during pregnancy and lactation and accounted for a prevalence of 65%.…”

“…In line with the reported outcome, Krieger et al (35) documented that VD supplement intake was the most actionable determinant of VD status at the 3 rd trimester and in neonatal cord blood, suggesting that VD-ST during pregnancy should receive more attention in clinical practice. Also, Wheeler et al (36) recommended 1 st trimester maternal VD screening and targeted supplementation for those "at risk".…”

“…In line with the beneficial effect of VD-ST on pregnancy outcome, Naseh et al 11 suggested promoting consumption of VD-fortified foods and supplements among pregnant women to improve maternal and neonatal outcomes. Also, Krieger et al 37 suggested that VD-ST during pregnancy should receive more attention in clinical practice as it was the most actionable determinant of VD status at the 3 rd trimester and in neonatal cord blood and Wheeler et al 38 recommended 1 st trimester maternal VD screening and targeted supplementation for those "at risk".…”
