A Longitudinal Examination of Stages of Change Model Applied to Mammography Screening

Abstract: Application of behavior change theories to ethnically diverse groups is limited. In a secondary analysis of intervention study data, we tested the validity of the transtheoretical model (TTM) of change among Chinese American immigrant women. Three hundred mammography non-adherent women were randomized to an intervention or control group. Compared with contemplators (60%), precontemplators reported higher perceived mammography barriers (p < .001) and lower breast cancer susceptibility (p < .01). Baseline contem… Show more

“…The perceived barriers to breast self-examination, for example, were smaller among women who had already performed breast self-examination (Tavafian et al 2009 ). With respect to mammography, women at the no-intention level perceived greater barriers compared to women who classified themselves at the intention level (Lee-Lin et al 2016 ; Salinas-Martinez et al 2018 ).…”

“…However, in our study, the breast cancer screening rate was only 54.9%. In addition, a summary of studies conducted in multiple provinces found that the breast cancer screening rates for Chinese women were only 15.17% to 65.6%, 8–10,42 far lower than the 81% target set by the United States 43 . Our findings suggest that healthcare providers need to better understand the determinants of women's satisfaction with the healthcare system and the perceptions of different sociodemographic groups on the satisfaction with healthcare providers to promote healthy behaviors and improve breast cancer screening practices.…”

“…A useful model for understanding barriers to modifying health behaviors is the transtheoretical model (TTM), which has been successfully used to increase physical activity, smoking cessation, mammography screening, and more recently, CRC screening [16][17][18][19]. The TTM provides categories for understanding an individual's "Stage of Change," or readiness to take action [20].…”
