“…Because dependency entails aspects of both vulnerability (e.g., excessive reliance on others) and resilience (e.g., the capacity to elicit social support), it is sometimes portrayed as a double-edged sword (Casalin, Luyten, Besser, Wouters, & Vliegen, 2014). This mixture of strengths and vulnerabilities likely translates into need-based experiences.…”

“…There is now a voluminous research literature that attests to the vulnerability of the self that is inherent in self-criticism and dependency, especially within the context of daily life stress (Dunkley et al 2003 ), but most of this research has been conducted without taking the situational or life context into account. However, there are some noteworthy exceptions (e.g., Casalin et al 2014 ; Sharhabani-Arzy et al 2005 ) and some clear examples of why and how contexts matter. For instance, evidence of the need for a stress threshold model emerged from a prospective study of self-criticism and dependency in postpartum adjustment among women with high-risk versus low-risk pregnancies (see Besser et al 2007 ).…”

“…This contrasting finding on the indirect effect of dependency was not surprising. Previous evidence has shown that the level of dependency might not cast a big impact on the relationship between parental bonding and depressive symptomology (Casalin, Luyten, Besser, Wouters, & Vliegen, 2014). Furthermore, another study also found that although self‐criticism has been established as a clear vulnerability factor to depression in many studies, the same cannot be said of dependency (Shahar, Blatt, Zuroff, Kuperminc, & Leadbeater, 2004).…”
