A Long-Term Study to Evaluate Acidic Skin Care Treatment in Nursing Home Residents: Impact on Epidermal Barrier Function and Microflora in Aged Skin

Abstract: Background: The pH of the stratum corneum (SC) in the elderly is elevated and linked to impaired SC function. Therefore, this paper addresses the question of whether acidic skin care generates positive clinical, biophysical, and microbiological effects in aged skin. Methods: This study was performed to assess skin care effects in nursing home residents (aged 80-97 years). Visual, biophysical, and microbiological methods were used. Subjects were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups and treated over 7 weeks with s… Show more

“…The long-term reduction of skin surface pH using topical treatments has recently been found to improve both skin barrier function and hydration, in agreement with the results presented here [29]. Skin surface pH is regulated via several mechanisms, e.g.…”

“…From face to arm to leg there was a decrease in SCH and TEWL, indicating increasing skin dryness which is supported by increasing clinical dryness scores. Xerosis is a common dermatological challenge in the elderly [25]. Especially in aged and geriatric populations, distal extremities are affected by dry skin [26].…”

“…A significant reduction of the baseline pH ss could potentially be achieved by a longer application period or an O/W emulsion with a more acidic pH, like in previous studies [22,23]. …”

“…More research addressing this topic may help affected patients and promote changes in skin hygiene and skin care behavior. For the elderly, who are also known to have elevated pH ss values and often suffer from dry skin, acidic toiletries have already been recommended in the past [15,19,21,22,33]. …”
