A Long‐Term Study of the Counseling Needs of Turkish University Students

Abstract: The author analyzed the gender, grade, sources of referral, and problem areas of 1,664 student‐clients who consulted a counseling center for individual counseling over an 11‐year period. The results showed that grade, sources of referral, and problem areas varied significantly over the years whereas gender did not. Students who consulted the center in recent years were mostly in their final year, came from all sources of referral, and had preexisting mental health concerns.

“…To address these concerns, the present study extends previous research by estimating the prevalence of depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation as well as exploring the relationship between work-related personality traits and depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation in a sample of medical students after one-year enrollment. Academic stress at medical schools has been found to be severe and mental health has been shown to worsen after students begin medical school, as it is a difficult time of transition from adolescence into early adulthood [ 27 ]. Identifying the underlying determinants of poor mental health and susceptibility to academic/psychosocial stress among medical students is vital for health monitoring, wellness/promotion preventive wellness services, stress management and later the junior doctors’ training period.…”

“…Research also shows that the number of students seeking counseling for university adjustment had the highest percentage among all problem areas within the first period of university life in Turkey (Doğan, 2012;Gizir, 2014). Although related research emphasizes the importance of identifying factors affecting university adjustment, only a limited number of studies focus on the adjustment of firstyear university students in Turkey.…”

“…This intimates that perhaps international students find it more difficult to adjust as the "newness" of their situation wanes and they become more settled in their new environment. Dogan (2012) supports those findings with reporting of greater developmental problems and mental health issues reported increasing over the amount of time as international students. Further, Hirai et al (2015) find that as the year continues on, self-acceptance and personal growth indicators decreases in international students, even as their adjustment levels increase.…”

“…Significant research exists concerning adjustment and best practices for international students at the college level (Arenas et al, 2002;Brisset, et al, 2010, Cemalcilar, 2008Chen, 1999;Dogan, 2012;Duffy et al, 2003;Kilinc & Granello, 2003;Rientes et al, 2012), but equal consideration should be given by researchers about the high-school aged international student. The schools' lack of knowledge about the implementation process is notably concerning when initiating a new program that has the potential to impact both host and international students significantly.…”
