A long-term follow-up study of patients with gastric cancer detected by mass screening

Abstract: This report is biased on 1,139 patients with gastric cancer (GC) detected by mass screening conducted by the Center for Adult Diseases, Osaka during 1961-1985. Early GC totalled 527 patients and advanced GC totalled 6121 patients. In 859 patients curative resection was performed. Their vital status was traced yearly and six patients were lost to follow-up. Relative survival rates of screening-detected GC patients were 69-70% and almost constant after 5 years from operation/diagnosis. The survival curve in whic… Show more

“…A number of studies have reported that screen-detected gastric cancers showed an earlier stage distribution [22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30] and had a lower case fatality rate than symptomdiagnosed cases [22,23,25,[30][31][32][33]. The proportion of early gastric cancer among screen-detected cases is 15%-30% higher than among symptom-diagnosed cases ( Table 2).…”

“…The prognosis of gastric cancer has been improving owing to progress in diagnostic techniques and treatment methods for gastric cancer, but peritoneal dissemination is the main cause of recurrence after curative resection of advanced cancer. The prognosis of gastric cancer which has invaded as far as the gastric serosa is still poor with a 5-year survival of less than 35% (Yamazaki et al, 1989;Shimada and Ajani, 1999). Among these malignant characteristics of gastric cancer cells, metastasis to the peritoneum is an especially complex phenomenon, which requires the involvement of many different genes in multiple steps for tumour cells.…”
