A Long-Term Evaluation on Transmission Line Expansion Planning with Multistage Stochastic Programming

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to apply multistage stochastic programming to the transmission line expansion planning problem, especially when uncertain demand scenarios exist. Since the problem of transmission line expansion planning requires an intensive computational load, dual decomposition is used to decompose the problem into smaller problems. Following this, progressive hedging and proximal bundle methods are used to restore the decomposed solutions to the original problems. Mixed-integer linear programmi… Show more

“…The formulation of the MSDTNEP model to minimize investment cost and amount of energy not supplied was computed using Equations (7)-(14) [4][5][6]. The objective function (Equation 7) corresponds to the addition of the investment cost in each period adequately transferred to the initial period using an interest rate λ.…”

“…To maintain the transmission system's reliability, North America Electrical Reliability Corporation (NERC) has published a series of standards in which all the balancing authorities within North American interconnection must comply [27]. N-1 security constraint is widely embedded in TNEP models to improve transmission capacity and security of power grids and is presented in Equation (14) [5,27].…”

“…Annually, the investigated regional power supply company "Oreolenergo", a branch of IDGC of Center, has an average of 344 power supply outages with a total of 98,495.835 kWh of unsupplied electric power [17]. The total number of power outages includes consumer outages, outages due to damage of overhead lines, cable lines, transformers, equipment of transformer substations, and distribution points.…”

“…In most cases, it is difficult, since a noticeable number of power lines especially in rural areas have surpassed their resources and require replacement [39,40]. According to the statistical data of "Oreolenergo" [17], the causes of damage to power lines are shortcomings in maintenance (45%), the influence of natural and weather conditions (33%), the influence of unauthorized persons (15%), other reasons (e.g., birds, animals, etc.) (7%).…”
