A long non-coding RNA promotes full activation of adult gene expression in the chicken α-globin domain

Abstract: Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) were recently shown to regulate chromatin remodelling activities. Their function in regulating gene expression switching during specific developmental stages is poorly understood. Here we describe a nuclear, non-coding transcript responsive for the stage-specific activation of the chicken adult α(D) globin gene. This non-coding transcript, named α-globin transcript long non-coding RNA (lncRNA-αGT) is transcriptionally upregulated in late stages of chicken development, when active… Show more

“…Once considered the noise in transcription, lncRNAs have been shown to play important roles in a wide range of biological processes (reviewed in Batista and Chang, 2013;Fatica and Bozzoni, 2014). Although there has been tremendous effort to identify lncRNAs in chicken development and diseases (Liu et al, 2018(Liu et al, , 2017Li et al, , 2016Li et al, , 2012Ren et al, 2018;Wu et al, 2018;Wang et al, 2017b;Zhang et al, 2017;Lin et al, 2016), there are very few reports to functionally annotate them (Roeszler et al, 2012;Arriaga-Canon et al, 2014;Cai et al, 2017;Fan et al, 2017). The nomenclature of the chicken lncRNAs has not reached a consensus and the current databases are still under constant improvement.…”

“…Arriaga‐Canon et al . () identified and studied the nuclear α ‐globin transcript lncRNA (lncRNA‐ α GT), which is responsible for the stage‐specific activation of the adult alpha D‐globin gene in chicken. The lncRNA‐ α GT is transcribed in sense with the globin genes.…”

“…The loss of lncRNA MHM expression in hens can cause asymmetric development of the ovary, and the loss of lncRNA MHM expression in males may result in decreased expression of the DMRT1 gene in testis [10]. Similarly, the lncRNA alphaGT controls the expression of the α-globin gene from the embryo to adult and plays a key role in chicken development [12]. However, there is almost no research on the combination of lncRNAs and shell gland development.…”
