In this paper the results of the BitTorrent measurement study are presented. Two sources of BitTorrent data were utilized: meta-data files that describe the content of resources shared by BitTorrent users and the logs of one of the currently most popular BitTorrent clients -µTorrent. µTorrent is founded upon a rather newly released UDP-based µTP protocol that is claimed to be more efficient than TCP-based clients. Experimental data have been collected for fifteen days from the popular torrent-discovery site thepiratebay.org (more than 30,000 torrents were captured and analyzed). During this period the activity and logs of an unmodified version of µTorrent client downloading sessions have been also captured. The obtained experimental results are swarmoriented (not tracker-oriented as has been previously researched), which has allowed us to look at BitTorrent and its users from an exchanged resources perspective. Moreover, comparative analysis of the clients' connections with and without µTP protocol is carried out to verify to what extent µTP improves BitTorrent transmissions. To the authors' best knowledge, none of the previous studies have addressed these issues.

How to rapidly disseminate a large-sized file to many recipients in flash crowd arrival patterns is a fundamental challenge in many applications, such as distributing multimedia content. To tackle this challenge, we present the Bee , which is a time-critical peer-to-peer data dissemination system aiming at minimizing the maximum dissemination time for all peers to obtain the complete file in flash crowd arrival patterns. Bee is a decentralized system that organizes peers into a randomized mesh-based overlay, and each peer only works with local knowledge. We introduce the slowest peer first strategy to boost the speed of dissemination and present a topology adaptation algorithm that adapts the number of connections based on upload bandwidth capacity of a peer. Bee is designed to support network heterogeneity and deals with the flash crowd arrival pattern without sacrificing the dissemination speed. We also show the lower bound analysis of the data dissemination problem, and present the experimental results to demonstrate that the performance of Bee can roughly approximate the lower bound of the data dissemination problem under flash crowd traffic.

Peer to peer networks have become one of the most popular networking methods because of their flexibility and many use cases such as file sharing and distributed computations. Unstructured overlay peer to peer networks are one of key components of peer to peer systems that are considerable because of their low cost in network construction and maintenance. One of the main challenges in unstructured peer to peer overlay networks is the topology mismatch between overlay network and the underlying physical infrastructure. The root of this challenge is lack of awareness about peers in the network infrastructure during connection to and disconnection from overlay network, in addition to the neighbor selection mechanism in the overlay network. Different types of awareness of network infrastructure includes awareness of the location of internet service providers. Also awareness of proximity, geographical location and resources of peers. In this article we present a middleware which configures overlay network by using public measurements and the estimated delay among peers in order to have the most conformity with the topology of physical infrastructure. To evaluate the performance, our middleware is implemented on the top of Gnutella which is an unstructured overlay peer-to-peer network. Our simulations show that our middleware enhances the conformity of overlay network to the topology of physical network infrastructure. In addition, it improved the average throughput and the average delay.
