A Literature‐Based Update on Benincasa hispida (Thunb.) Cogn.: Traditional Uses, Nutraceutical, and Phytopharmacological Profiles

Abstract: Benincasa hispida (Thunb.) Cogn. (Cucurbitaceae) is an annual climbing plant, native to Asia with multiple therapeutic uses in traditional medicine. This updated review is aimed at discussing the ethnopharmacological, phytochemical, pharmacological properties, and molecular mechanisms highlighted in preclinical experimental studies and toxicological safety to evaluate the therapeutic potential of this genus. The literature from PubMed, Google Scholar, Elsevier, Springer, Science Direct, and database was analyz… Show more

“…There is proof that the usage of natural compounds originating from microbes, animals, or plants for medical purposes goes back to the Neanderthal epoch [114,115]. People have gathered knowledge and become an expert in their applications due to various biological activities of isolated natural items [116][117][118]. The invention of the chemical structure aided the manufacturing of the essential compounds rather than separating them from natural sources [119].…”

“…Cardioprotection refers to all systems and methods that help keep the heart healthy by decreasing or even preventing myocardial damage [ 103 ]. U. dioica water and petroleum ether extract at, respectively, 20 and 150 mg/kg/day improved blood lipid level in rats, decreased blood cholesterol levels and LDL/HDL lipoprotein ratios after 30 days.…”

“…The secondary metabolites can be broadly classified into alkaloids, terpenes, flavonoids, lignans, steroids, curcumins, saponins, phenolics, and glucosides [ 16 ]. These secondary metabolites, either in individuals or in a group can be used for designing personalized cancer prevention programs as these plants based bioactive compounds present much required geno-protective effects such as DNA damage protection in healthy cells [ 17 19 ] .…”
