A Literature Analysis of the WAG Injectivity Abnormalities in the CO2 Process

Abstract: Summary This paper summarizes the hypotheses and theories relating to the causes and expectations of injectivity behavior in various CO2 and gasflooded reservoirs. The intent of the paper is to:Provide a concise compendium to the current understanding of the water-alternating-gas (WAG) mechanism and predictability.Provide a comprehensive single-source review of the causes and conditions of injectivity abnormalities in CO2/gasflood EOR projects.Aid in formulating the direction of research.Help… Show more

“…Some few examples report the use of perfluorocarbons as tracers for CO 2 [25]. Microscopic sweep efficiency in EOR CO 2 -floods can be high, but macroscopic sweep efficiency (EMA) can still be low due to combination of high mobility ratio, gravity segregation and heterogeneity [26][27][28][29]. By reducing the mobility of CO 2 , EMA can be improved.…”

“…125 Also, there is increasing interest in minimizing CO 2 (greenhouse gas) emissions by sequestrating CO 2 in depleted oil and gas reservoirs or in saline aquifers. 126 The interest in increasing CO 2 injection into geological formations requires a better understanding of mechanisms and extent of CO 2 plume development and subsequent dissolution into formation brine.…”

“…This effect is useful when targeting pockets and bypassed areas of oil and drain them effectively (Hadlow, 1992). The increasing price of natural gas, higher incremental oil recoveries by CO 2 , compared to hydrocarbon gases (Rogers and Grigg, 2000) as well as the additional benefit of carbon sequestration tips the scales in favor of CO 2 for future gas injection projects.…”
