A list of the parasitic Protozoa, Helminths and Arthropoda recorded from species of the Family Anatidae (Ducks, Geese and Swans)

Abstract: The following list, compiled during my tenure of a grant given by the Nuffield Foundation to the Wildfowl Trust, Slimbridge, Gloucestershire, records species of Protozoa, helminths and Arthropoda found in anatid birds, either by the authors of the papers listed in the References, or by others to whose work these authors refer. It will be seen that there are, after the names of all the parasites, numbers which indicate, by reference to the corresponding numbers in the References, the authors and publications in… Show more

“…This study has examined one parasite in isolation to the many others that occur in eiders (Lapage, 1961;McDonald, 1969;Bishop & Threlfall, 1974). Interactions between different parasite species in the same host are known (Cross, 1934;Holmes, 1961Holmes, , 1962, but the possible effects of inter-species interactions on the dynamics of P. botulus have not been taken into account in this study.…”

“…Finally, we incorporated an index of parasite sharing (IPS) calculated by Hamilton, Mesher and Zuk, using lists of the known parasites of waterfowl (Lapage 1961 ;McDonald 1969).…”

“…Within freshwater ecosystems, attention has begun to focus on important emerging diseases (Okamura & Feist, 2011) complementing the already extensive literature that exists on a wide range of wellestablished animals parasitic on vertebrates and invertebrates, e.g. Lapage (1961), Chubb (1979), Grizzle & Brunner (2009). Parasites are now recognized as major components of ecosystems, both in terms of total biomass and especially in food web dynamics (Lafferty et al, 2006Szuroczki & Richardson, 2009).…”
