A linear programming method for designing the pole profile of high-field quality magnets

Abstract: In beam lines and in synchrotrons various types of magnets of high-field quality are needed. The field quality of iron magnets mainly depends on the pole profile. In this work we have used the linear programming technique to optimize the pole profile for obtaining a very high-field quality while keeping the pole width small. The use of this method has been demonstrated in dipoles, quadrupoles and sextupoles.
