A Life Cycle for the Development of Autonomic Systems: The E-mobility Showcase

Abstract: Abstract-Component ensembles are a promising way of building self-aware autonomic adaptive systems. This approach has been promoted by the EU project ASCENS, which develops the core idea of ensembles by providing rigorous semantics as well as models and methods for the whole development life cycle of an ensemble-based system. These methods specifically address adaptation, self-awareness, self-optimization, and continuous system evolution. In this paper, we demonstrate the key concepts and benefits of the ASCEN… Show more

“…To assess to which extent SCEL meets our expectations, we have used it to tackle a number of case studies from robotics [15,24,13,34], service provision domains [19,23], cloud-computing [36,38] and e-Mobility domains [12]. Moreover, to verify the impact of SCEL on autonomic programming we have shown how it can be used to model a key aspect such as self-expression [13] and how it can flexibly model different adaptation patterns [15].…”

“…Moreover, we envision integrating the proposed technique into the existing ensemble development life cycle [23], which provides a systematic approach (i.e., methodology) towards engineering (ensemble-based) CPS. The presented work fits into the modeling part of that cycle, which is followed by verification performed on the basis of simulation techniques -similar to the procedure shown in this paper.…”

“…Note that if required, the task can be formally defined, e.g. using the State Of The Affairs (SOTA, [Abeywickrama et al 2012]) methodology for describing states, requirements and tasks in combination with the Software Component Ensemble Language (SCEL, ), as seen in [Bures et al 2013]. In another paper we conducted a study in which we consider systems in which run time changes in task specification or objectives can occur.…”
