The Distribution of Anthochlor Floral Pigments in North American Coreopsis (Compositae): Taxonomic and Phyletic Interpretations

Anthochlors (chalcones and aurones) occur in floral tissues of all members of North American Coreopsis. The genus in North America consists of 46 species distributed in 11 sections, and a total of five chalcone aglycones are found in it. The chalcone butein occurs in all sections, and is the only anthochlor constituent in the closely related woody Mexican sections Electra and Anathysana. These two sections are viewed as primitive. The morphologically distinct but putatively unspecialized woody Mexican section Pseudo‐Agarista sequesters both okanin and butein; the same two anthochlors also characterize two additional sections of herbaceous perennials, Silphidium and Tuckermannia. Sections Euleptosyne and Pugiopappus, comprised of annuals restricted primarily to California, exhibit the rare chalcone stillopsidin in addition to butein and okanin. The remaining four sections, Palmatae, Coreopsis, Calliopsis and Eublepharis are among the more specialized in North America, and are sometimes considered to represent a distinct phyletic line or two related lines. All or some of the members of these sections sequester the very rare chalcone lanceolatin in floral tissues in addition to okanin. Butein is also present in some or all species in each section, and isoliquiritigenin occurs rarely in two sections. Those sections considered more specialized have additional anthochlors relative to primitive sections, and any compound found in a more primitive section also occurs in a more advanced one. Thus, the trend in floral anthochlors in North American Coreopsis is toward increased number of compounds rather than reduction.

Cyperus scariosus, a perennial herb plant native to India is an invasive weed with wide distribution. It remained to be an important ingredient of several prescriptions used in indigenous system of medicine to treat a variety of diseases including diarrhea, epilepsy, gonorrhea, syphilis and liver damage. Recent studies highlight its phytochemistry, bioactivity and therapeutic uses. Major chemical components of this herb are alkaloids, flavonols, glycosides, polyphenols, saponins, sesquiterpenoids and essential oil responsible for its claimed traditional importance as one of the potential medicinal herb. Cyperiol, the essential oil obtained on steam distillation of the rhizomes contains about 100 compounds, has its value in perfumary and account for the antibacterial, antifungal, insecticidal and ovicidal activity. Complete information regarding the plant species has been collected from various books and journals and internet databases. This communication aims to integrate all the information available on C. scariosus which may help academicians, agronomists, environmentalists, biological scientists and researchers to explore the potential of this commonly growing weed. Further the data generated would be useful for the pharmaceutical industry.

Authentic Ativisha (Aconitum heterophyllum) is a rare, endangered Himalayan species. Ayurveda classical texts of c. 15th–16th century, introduced “abhava-pratinidhi dravya” concept, wherein Ativisha was categorized as an abhava dravya (unavailable drug) and Musta (Cyperus rotundus) was suggested as a pratinidhi dravya (substitute) for it. C. rotundus is a weed, abundantly available pan-India. Cryptocoryne spiralis (Naattu Athividayam) and Cyperus scariosus (Nagarmotha) are also traded as Ativisha and Musta, respectively. Yet, there are no scientific studies to validate the use of substitutes. A. heterophyllum bears no similarity in terms of botanical classification with the other candidates. This article reviews published literature with an emphasis to look for similar phytochemicals or groups of phytochemicals in the species that could contribute to similar pharmacological activities, thereby supporting the drug substitution from a bio-medical perspective. Alkaloids like atisine were found to be the main focus of studies on A. heterophyllum, whereas for the Cyperus spp., it was terpenoids like cyperene. Although alkaloids and terpenoids were reported from both species, alkaloids in C. rotundus and terpenoids in A. heterophyllum were minor constituents. Reports on phytochemicals on Cryptocoryne spiralis and C. scariosus were very limited. Despite no significant similarities in chemical profiles reported, the dravyaguna (Ayurvedic drug classification) of Ativisha and Musta was quite similar warranting further exploration into the bio-functional aspects of the drug materials.
