A leishmaniosis surveillance system among stray dogs in the region of Madrid: ten years of serodiagnosis (1996–2006)

Abstract: Two seroepidemiological surveys on canine leishmaniosis in stray dogs were performed annually in the Madrid region for 10 years (November 1996-April 2006). The presence of anti-Leishmania antibodies was detected by immunofluorescence antibodies test (cut off 1:100). The overall seroprevalence found in the 1,803 dogs studied was 7.8% (141 positive dogs). Seropositivity was not associated with either breed or sex. Statistical analysis revealed greater seroprevalence in groups of older dogs, indicating that the p… Show more

“…They reported that they had not recorded any increase in the leishmaniasis detection tests performed in their clinics, where the prevalence of canine leishmaniasis was around 5%. In 2011, they performed leishmaniasis detection tests on 1,007 dogs during an anti-rabies vaccination campaign, using the rK39 blood test (BLK Fast Test, LETI), giving a prevalence of 1.0% in dogs that were household pets and 3.6% in dogs that were in dog pounds, results that were similar to those estimated in other studies performed in the region of Madrid [12,13].…”

“…Given the role that dogs classically play as the reservoir, actions initially concentrated on their study, but the surveillance system did not detect any increase in the prevalence of leishmaniasis in these animals, with level being around 5% [11][12][13].…”

“…In a studies in southern Spain, the prevalences were reported as 5.3% (Acedo-Sánchez et al, 1996) and 22% in dogs older than 1 year old (Alonso et al, 2010), whereas, in Catalonia, the seroprevalence was reported as 10.2% (Fisa et al, 1999). The seroprevalence in Madrid region found in 1,803 dogs analysed was 7.8% (Miró et al, 2007) and 8.1 % in another study in the same region (Gálvez et al, 2010). However, the seroprevalence was lower (3.7%) in the northwestern Spain (Amusategui et al, 2004).…”
