A Lean transportation approach for improving emergency medical operations

Abstract: This paper extends the approach of Lean Transportation to improve the performance of Emergency Medical Processes (EMP), adapting the main concepts of the approach to incorporate the main characteristics of the EMP environment. The paper is based on an inductive theory-building process initiated from a case study in the field of Emergency Medical Services. The development of the suggested performance improvement approach was triggered from an exhaustive analysis of the process involved and an exploratory review… Show more

“…Salhieh et al (2018) investigated the impact of waste reduction practice on fleet operational efficiency in road hauler firms. The subject of synergy between lean transportation and technology was addressed by Villarreal et al (2018), who used digital algorithms to obtain the shortest path of the vehicle. Garza-Reyes et al (2019) used internet-based tools to improve communication and enhance the control of stretches, thus achieving better integration between the vehicles and the health-care provider.…”

“…Villarreal et al (2016) described lean thinking as a series of activities to eliminate waste within the value chain to create value for customers. This includes waste of defects, overproduction, transportation, waiting, inventory, motion, over-processing, human potential (Villarreal et al , 2018). Lean philosophy consists of five principles to create value for the customer: specifying value from the perspective of the customer, identifying the value stream, creating a continuous, uninterrupted flow, establishing a pull-based system that enables products to be created at the time of customer need and implementing excellence to pursue perfection (Womack and Jones, 1996).…”

“…An overview of academic literature shows scholarly interest on healthcare operational excellence (Antony et al, 2018;Villarreal et al, 2018;Dehem and Bamford, 2017;D'Andreamatteo, 2015;Waring and Bishop, 2012). Many healthcare firms are beginning to use Six Sigma approach to improve patients' satisfaction (Lazarus and Stamps, 2003).…”
