“…The latter has been identified as of concern in prior research (Harrison, 1999;Harrison 2004) and it is clear that aged care providers -religious and secular alike -will need to do a lot more to make their services appropriate to and welcoming of older lesbians and gays. The potential for developing training strategies to improve practitioners' 'cultural competence' in responding to older lesbians and gays is considerable.…”

“…While there have been some important qualitative studies conducted in Australia (e.g. Barrett, 2008;Chamberlain & Robinson, 2002;Harrison, 1999;Hughes, 2007b;Hughes, 2007c;Waite, 1995), there remains a lack of larger scale quantitative investigations of lesbian and gay ageing. This has not been helped by the fact that Australian studies of sexuality have tended to exclude older people from their samples (Minichiello, Plummer & Loxton, 2004).…”

“…However, there is a lack of understanding of what these initiatives have meant for older lesbian and gay people in terms of their expectations for and experiences of aged‐care, and whether all people have been able to benefit from these initiatives. Studies conducted in Australia have examined experiences and perceptions of residential‐care, which broadly show a range of concerns and fears, including management of identity disclosure, lack of safe spaces for intimate relationships and the need for culturally safe and inclusive services (Barrett, ; Barrett, Crameri, Lambourne, Latham, & Whyte, ; Cartwright, Hughes, & Lienert, ; Chamberlain & Robinson, ; Crameri, Barrett, Latham, & Whyte, ; Harrison, ; Hughes, , ; Lovelock, ; Waite, ). Research has also found lesbian and gay people tend to have low awareness regarding their legal options, with most avoiding or not being given the opportunity to discuss the issue with healthcare providers (Hughes & Cartwright, , ).…”

“…(Binstock, 2004) These trends have taken root in many developing countries as well. Even though the links between older people and human rights have received some attention in the literature (Giordano, 2005;Tonts & Larsen, 2002;Harrison, 1999), assuring the rights of older people as an ultimate human development objective has so far been given insufficient attention by NGOs dealing with their welfare. Disadvantaged groups like women, children, and migrant workers captured international attention right after the United Nations was established, a time when global population aging was not widely apparent.…”
