“…the developed polarized laser backlight IPS-LCD. The luminance was 1,090 cd/m 2 , while that of the nonpolarized laser backlight LCD [7] with the same laser diodes and the same liquid crystal display panel was 435 cd/m 2 . The luminance was increased to 2.5 times.…”

“…Thus, one of the polarized lights is recycled. In the laser backlight LCD that we previously developed [7], the reflective polarizer increased the transmittance to 1.26 times. If the polarized backlight is realized, then the transmittance doubles, which gives approximately 1.6 times the luminance of the previously developed laser backlight LCD, as shown in Table 1(c).…”

“…Figure 2 shows the structure of the developed polarized laser backlight. To reduce the bezel width, we adapted the double light guide plate laser backlight [7]. The two light guide plates are stacked in the side-edge laser backlight.…”
“…Changing the light source of the backlight from conventional LEDs to lasers, therefore, is necessary. Previous research reported that LCDs with a laser backlight satisfy the BT.2020 color gamut [3][4][5][6][7]. These laser backlights use laser diodes as light sources.…”

“…These laser backlights use laser diodes as light sources. We achieved 98% of the BT.2020 color gamut with a laser backlight and appropriate color filters [6,7].…”
We have developed a 17.3-inch 8K wide color gamut in-plane switching LCD (IPS-LCD) with a polarized laser backlight. By applying a zero-zero-birefringence polymer, the polarized laser backlight emits polarized light with 88% polarization. The IPS-LCD with the developed polarized laser backlight achieves a wide color gamut with high efficiency.
