A Large-scale Kinematic Study of Molecular Gas in High-z Cluster Galaxies: Evidence for High Levels of Kinematic Asymmetry

Abstract: We investigate the resolved kinematics of the molecular gas, as traced by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array in CO (2−1), of 25 cluster member galaxies across three different clusters at a redshift of z ∼ 1.6. This is the first large-scale analysis of the molecular gas kinematics of cluster galaxies at this redshift. By separately estimating the rotation curve of the approaching and receding sides of each galaxy via kinematic modeling, we quantify the difference in total circular velocity to char… Show more

“…In the high-density environment, like groups or clusters, the galaxies close to the centre are observed to have very low HI gas (Cayatte et al 1994(Cayatte et al , 1990Solanes et al 2001;Vollmer et al 2006;van den Bergh et al 1990), low star formation rate (Gomez et al 2003;Mun et al 2021), early-type morphology (Goto et al 2003;Pimbblet 2003) and high degree of assymetry in the galaxy disc (Cramer et al 2023). Gunn & Gott III (1972) proposed a mechanism called Ram Pressure Stripping (RPS) to explain the dearth of gas in galaxies in clusters of galaxies.…”
