While the proliferation of Cloud services have greatly impacted our society, how green are these services is yet to be answered. Although, demand escalation for green services has grown due to societal awareness, the approaches to provide green services and establish Green SLAs remain oblivious for cloud or infrastructure providers. The main challenge for cloud provider is to manage Green SLAs with their customers while satisfying their business objectives, such as maximizing profits by lowering expenditure for green energy. Since, Green SLA needs to be proposed based on the presence of green energy, the intermittent nature of renewable sources makes it difficult to be achieved. In response, this paper presents a scheme for green energy management in the presence of explicit and implicit integration of renewable energy in data center. More specifically we propose three contributions: i) we introduce the concept of virtualization of green energy to address the uncertainty of green energy availability, ii) we extend the Cloud Service Level Agreement (CSLA) language to support Green SLA by introducing two new threshold parameters and iii) we introduce greenSLA algorithm which leverages the concept of virtualization of green energy to provide per interval specific Green SLA. Experiments were conducted with real workload profile from PlanetLab and server power model from SPECpower to demonstrate that, Green SLA can be successfully established and satisfied without incurring higher cost.

Demand for Green services is increasing considerably as people are getting more environmental conscious to build a sustainable society. Therefore, enterprise and clients want to shift their workloads towards green Cloud environment offered by the Infrastructure-asa-Service (IaaS) provider. The main challenge for an IaaS provider is to determine the best trade-off between its profit while using renewable energy and customers satisfaction. In order to address this issue, we provide a Cloud energy broker, which can adjust the availability and price combination to buy Green energy dynamically from the market to make datacenter green. We investigate a simplified power model from where we can formulate and predict power demand. Our energy broker tries to maximize of using renewable energy under strict budget constraint whereas it also tries to minimize the use of brown energy by capping the limit of overall energy consumption of datacenter. The energy broker was evaluated with a real workload traced by PlanetLab. Experimental results show that our energy broker successfully keeps the best trade-off.

Summary There lacks trust between the cloud customer and provider to enforce traditional cloud SLA (Service Level Agreement) where the blockchain technique seems a promising solution. However, current explorations still face challenges to prove that the off‐chain SLO (Service Level Objective) violations really happen before recorded into the on‐chain transactions. In this paper, a witness model is proposed implemented with smart contracts to solve this trust issue. The introduced role, “Witness”, gains rewards as an incentive for performing the SLO violation report, and the payoff function is carefully designed in a way that the witness has to tell the truth, for maximizing the rewards. This fact that the witness has to be honest is analyzed and proved using the Nash Equilibrium principle of game theory. For ensuring the chosen witnesses are random and independent, an unbiased selection algorithm is proposed to avoid possible collusions. An auditing mechanism is also introduced to detect potential malicious witnesses. Specifically, we define three types of malicious behaviors and propose quantitative indicators to audit and detect these behaviors. Moreover, experimental studies based on Ethereum blockchain demonstrate the proposed model is feasible, and indicate that the performance, ie, transaction fee, of each interface follows the design expectations.
