A Laboratory for Education in Molecular Medicine: a Dedicated Resource for Medical Student Research

Abstract: The Paul L. Foster School of Medicine in El Paso, Texas seated its inaugural class in 2009 and introduced a highly-integrated pre-clinical curriculum that provides our students with a solid introduction to the scientific principles of medicine, medical skills, early clinical experiences, ethics and professionalism. To further enhance their undergraduate training, all students additionally complete a scholarly concentration requirement called the Scholarly Activity and Research Program (SARP). Students can choo… Show more

“…Initially, the students greatly appreciated the amount of effort put into community health projects, as indicated by the high average score of 4.34 out of 5 and its position as the highest priority. This focus on exertion is consistent with other research conducted by Pfarr et al (2013), which suggests that medical students frequently acknowledge and value the commitment and diligent effort invested in endeavors [20]. In addition, the chosen issue garnered considerable interest from students, placing second with a mean score of 4.26.…”

“…Many medical students currently participate in research experiences, usually as electives, and many of these projects are focused on research questions related to molecular medicine. 27 At other institutions, the focus is on combining the strengths of biomedical graduate programs and clinical programs to produce medical professionals that have received significant opportunities to engage in research during their training. 28 Furthermore, the drive toward precision medicine, where prevention and treatment decisions require integrating individual variations in genetic, phenotypic, and psychosocial characteristics, is currently on the horizon and will require clinical research to inform best practices and clinicians that can competently engage in information management.…”
