A La-Icp-MS and Shrimp U/Pb Age Constraint on the Timing of Ree Mineralisation Associated With Bushveld Granites

Abstract: Monazite occurs in association with fluorite and polymetallic sulphides in brecciated pegmatites emplaced within discordant pipelike structures, and spatially associated mineralised quartz veins that cut hydrothermally altered Bushveld-age Nebo Granite (Lebowa Granite Suite) on the farm Houtenbek 194 JR. Mineralisation of this style has been viewed as having a high-temperature origin related to a late-stage of Bushveld-age granite emplacement. However, early attempts to date Houtenbek monazite in the 1950 to 1… Show more

“…The standard and unknown zircon grains were ablated in a small-volume (tear-drop shape) sample cell with an insert that holds one 25-mm-diameter sample mount and a 7-mm-diameter standard mount . The acquisitions consisted of a 20 s of laser warm-up and a measurement of the gas blank, followed by 40 s measurements of the U, Th and Pb signals during ablation, and a 20 s washout (e.g., Buick et al, 2011;Lana et al, 2011). The samples, the standards and the sample holders were acid-washed before being analyzed to remove possible surface Pb contamination.…”

“…Monazite USGS 44069 is widely used in various studies as a calibration RM, e.g., [5,15,29,30,[33][34][35][36][37][38]. Despite the above noted discrepancy, reference monazite USGS 44069 is an excellent RM for U-Th/Pb dating of monazite, because of its reliable age reproducibility [32,38].…”

“…Data from the first two analytical sessions (120605, 130111) were used to (1) evaluate the effect of spot size and repetition rate on accuracy and precision of the U-Th/Pb age of the monazites and to (2) establish an analytical protocol that can be applied in different laboratories. The most commonly used analytical parameters for U-Th/Pb monazite dating such as a spot size (5, 10 and 20 µm) and repetition rate (5 and 10 Hz) were applied, e.g., [5,8,10,16,17,22,29,36,51,56]. To compare the results, the same ablation conditions were maintained by applying the same analytical setting and analyzing the same growth zone of the grains.…”

“…The general operating conditions and U-Pb protocols are described in Moreira et al (2016) and Takenaka et al (2015). Acquisition time of the gas blank was 20 seconds, followed by a 40 s of measurement of U, Th and Pb signals during ablation, and a 30 s washout (Buick et al, 2011;Moreira et al, 2016). Laser ablation were set at 30 µm spot size, fluence between 6 and 8 J/cm 2 at a 10 Hz repetition rate using He mixed with Ar as a carrier gas.…”
