A Knowledge Perspective on Quality in Complex Citizen Science

Abstract: This article examines how project leaders in complex citizen science projects ensure the quality of project outcomes given the challenges of involving citizens, whose knowledge is diverse and unknown beforehand. To this aim, a qualitative multiple-case study was carried out to compare the practices of five collaborative online citizen science projects in the humanities in which citizens transcribe, translate, and annotate handwritten manuscripts from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. The choices made to acce… Show more

“…One way to tackle a large-scale project such as pharmaceutical postmarket surveillance is by using crowdsourcing or citizen science. Citizen science refers to a participative way of running scientific research projects, done mostly through the Internet for data collecting, processing, and analysis. , This model allows for a monitoring system that cannot be attainable by individual or government entities alone . We founded the distributed pharmaceutical analysis lab (DPAL) after realizing that we had too many samples for our lab to analyze in a meaningful time frame.…”

“…Although most prominent in textor image-based research in humanities [62], co-design is frequently used for 3D content and experience design for museums [63,64] or (serious) history games (e.g., [65]). Besides the challenges of participatory processes such as user activation and management, task definition, and quality control [66], citizen science tasks in humanities must handle complex, non-standardized, and knowledge-intensive tasks and therefore are hard to assess with regard to the scientific quality of processes and outcomes [67,68]. Finally, citizen science approaches have found their way into research and teaching in various university disciplines in recent years [69], including digital heritage (e.g., [70]).…”
