A Joint Evaluation of the Wind and Wave Energy Resources Close to the Greek Islands

Abstract: Abstract:The objective of this work is to analyze the wind and wave energy potential in the proximity of the Greek islands. Thus, by evaluating the synergy between wind and waves, a more comprehensive picture of the renewable energy resources in the target area is provided. In this study, two different data sources are considered. The first data set is provided by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) through the ERA-Interim project and covers an 11-year period, while the second data s… Show more

“…From this perspective, more and more international treaties impose prompt global warming actions to reduce the output of carbon dioxide to limit the levels of pollution. Thus, it is desired that the gap between the renewable resource extraction and the conventional methods be dramatically reduced [2][3][4][5][6], and therefore, many studies and coastal engineering applications have been focused on the energy potential 2 of 21 of the offshore and nearshore marine environments [7][8][9][10][11]. Economically speaking, the marine areas have a significant role in the global financial mechanism.…”

“…Subsequently, a high energy demand exists here and the potential of the renewable energy resources need to be assessing for further exploitation. Moreover, until now no offshore wind farms have been deployed in the Mediterranean waters although some previous studies indicated it to have suitable wind potential [5][6][7]. The new technology developments of the floating wind farms open the perspective to be exploited the potential of deep-water offshore wind power.…”
