A Jia-shaped artistic patch antenna for dual-band circular polarization

Abstract: This article presents a novel single-feed circularly polarized patch antenna for dual-band (2.6 and 3.4 GHz) applications. Details of the design procedure and design considerations of the proposed antenna are described. The novelties of the proposed antenna are counted by (i) a meaningful Jia-shaped patch used as the primary radiator; (ii) a 3D Lshaped feeding probe used to excite the stacked patches so that the near degenerate-modes are excited at the desired dual band; (iii) down-tilt beams achieved that are… Show more

“…According to the cavity‐model theory, the patch and the ground plane form a resonant cavity. The CP antenna radiates simultaneously at two fundamental modes 16 : the radiation mode with its electric field parallel to the geometric length of the patch is defined as the TM10 mode, whereas the TM01 mode is polarized along the width direction. For a nearly‐square patch antenna, the equivalent network model can be drawn as shown in Figure 4, where the two parallel‐connected circuits with resistor ( R ), capacitor ( C ) and inductor ( L ) correspond to the two orthogonal modes of the CP patch antenna, and the L f represents the feed inductance.…”

“…Otherwise, the LP‐patch sensor may not function properly due to being impervious to the change in patch width 6‐10 . More seriously, the LP‐patch sensor has an inherent disadvantage that its maximum sensitivity is limited by 1 ppm/με 11‐16 . This is because the resonant frequency of LP patch antenna is much more affected by the change in patch (resonant) length than in its width.…”

“…For example, in Refs. 8, 9, the circularly polarized antennas of Chinese character Jia‐ and Meang‐shaped character have also been developed as artistic patch antennas. Especially for circularly polarized reconfigurable antennas, relevant reports have been widely studied and tracked, including frequency reconfigurable antenna, 10 polarization reconfigurable antenna, 11,12 patterns reconfigurable antenna, 13,14 or the arbitrary combination of the above types 15 …”

“…A few years later, other interesting shapes of Chinese character were proposed for CP, 9 LP, 10 reconfigurable CP 11 and mm‐wave applications 12 . More recently, a Jia ‐shaped patch antenna was also reported for dual‐band CP applications, 13 where its frequency band ratio can be adjusted.…”
