A Java-based Electronic Healthcare Record Software for Beta-thalassaemia

Abstract: BackgroundBeta-thalassaemia is a hereditary disease, the prevalence of which is high in persons of Mediterranean, African, and Southeast Asian ancestry. In Greece it constitutes an important public health problem. Beta-thalassaemia necessitates continuous and complicated health care procedures such as daily chelation; biweekly transfusions; and periodic cardiology, endocrinology, and hepatology evaluations. “…However, the parenteral or subcutaneous administrations with cumbersome infusion schedules (8-12 h infusion at a dose of 40-50 mg/kg/day) and toxic side effects such as auditory, ocular, and neurotoxic abnormalities limit its use in clinical practice. Deferiprone is an alternative to deferoxamine for patients who cannot tolerate deferoxamine or in cases of treatment failure [6]. However, deferiprone has not been licensed by the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration for use in patients with MDS [7].…”

A similar medical web-based application was presented by Deftereos et al [12] to facilitate clinical work by allowing the communication of patients records between experts. The aim of the work was to share patient records of a particular disease at a national level.…”

“…According to Choe and Yoo [40] a key point to allow cooperation among heterogeneous repositories held at various hospitals is the introduction of a common healthcare-record, and XML allows to efficiently store this information. Defteros et al [12] integrated the use of the XML documents designed to allow the exchange of Electronic Healthcare Record (EHCR) information between different clinical information systems. Complete patient records or record extracts are exported in the form of messages in XML documents.…”

“…The initial thought was to have a Java program running on the PDA which requires either Java 2 Micro Edition [11,12]. Java has been proven as a powerful and efficient tool for real time systems [13][14][15]. However, since the goal was to make it easy to implement the system on any PDA, the idea was modified.…”
