Evidence for nonthermal activity in clusters of galaxies is well established from radio observations of synchrotron emission by relativistic electrons. New windows in the extreme-ultraviolet and hard X-ray ranges have provided more powerful tools for the investigation of this phenomenon. Detections of hard X-rays in the 20Y100 keV range have been reported for several clusters of galaxies, notably from Coma and others. Based on these earlier observations we identified the relatively high-redshift cluster 1ES 0657À558 (also known as RX J0658À5557) as a good candidate for hard X-ray observations. This cluster, also known as the Bullet Cluster, has many other interesting and unusual features, most notably that it is undergoing a merger, clearly visible in the X-ray images. Here we present results from successful RXTE observations of this cluster. We summarize past observations and their theoretical interpretation that guided us in the selection process. We describe the new observations and present the constraints we can set on the flux and spectrum of the hard X-rays. Finally, we discuss the constraints one can set on the characteristics of accelerated electrons that produce the hard X-rays and the radio radiation.

Diffuse Nonthermal X-Ray Emission: Evidence of Cosmic-Ray Acceleration at the Shock Front in IC 1262

We report the first localization of diffuse, nonthermal, X-ray emission from a nearby galaxy cluster. Using Chandra data, we have isolated a diffuse nonthermal X-ray component with a photon index of ϩ0.14 G p 2.21and a flux of photons cm s keV at 1 keV that extends from ∼1Ј .5 to ∼2Ј .5 to the south of9.5 # 10 Ϫ2.5 the X-ray flux peak. Comparison with simulations implies that the diffuse nonthermal emission is produced by primary electrons, accelerated at shocks to relativistic velocities. Using these results and the flux and hardness maps produced with data from the Chandra Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer, we conclude that a smaller subclump coming from the north merged with IC 1262. The offset of the cD galaxy from the X-ray peak and large peculiar velocity indicate that the subclump's impact parameter was to the west and on the near side of IC 1262.

Abstract.Evidence for non-thermal activity in clusters of galaxies is well established from radio observations of synchrotron emission by relativistic electrons, and new windows (in EUV and Hard X-ray ranges) have provided more powerful tools for its investigation. The hard X-ray observations, notably from Coma, are summarized and results of a new RXTE observations of a high redshift cluster are presented. It is shown that the most likely emission mechanism for these radiations is the inverse Compton scattering of the cosmic microwave background photons by the same electrons responsible for the radio radiation. Various scenarios for acceleration of the electrons are considered and it is shown that the most likely model is episodic acceleration by shocks or turbulence, presumably induced by merger activity, of high energy electrons injected into the inter-cluster medium by galaxies or active galactic nuclei.
