A hybrid expert‐procedural system for the design of reverse‐osmosis desalination plants

Abstract: The problem of computer-aided design and synthesis of a reverseosmosis desalination plant is presented. A hybrid expert-procedural system has been developed that deal with the synthesis problem at two levels of abstraction. The expert part of the system uses qualitative data, and through heuristics, makes decisions about the structure of the plant. The procedural

“…[1] Seawater desalination is an effective method to produce freshwater and mitigate the water crisis. [2] Over the past few decades, efforts have been made to advance seawater desalination processes, such as seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO), multi-effect distillation (MED), multi-stage flash (MSF), and other innovative desalination technologies. [3,4] Nevertheless, the discharge of brines with high salinity from seawater desalination systems has become a serious environmental issue.…”
