A Hybrid Cooling Model Based on the Use of Newly Designed Fluted Conformal Cooling Channels and Fastcool Inserts for Green Molds

Abstract: The paper presents a hybrid cooling model based on the use of newly designed fluted conformal cooling channels in combination with inserts manufactured with Fastcool material. The hybrid cooling design was applied to an industrial part with complex geometry, high rates of thickness, and deep internal concavities. The geometry of the industrial part, besides the ejection system requirements of the mold, makes it impossible to cool it adequately using traditional or conformal standard methods. The addition of he… Show more

“…The maximum outer diameter, minimum outer diameter, height, and thickness were 30 mm, 19.5 mm, 30 mm, and 2 mm, respectively. There are eight cross-sections of CCC [ 16 ], i.e., circular, rectangular, elliptical, square, semicircular, profiled, fluted, and water drop. In this study, two kinds of cross-sections of the CCC were used to study.…”

“…Using SEM images and backscattered electrons it was possible to segment porosities from inclusions. 4 Results And Discussions 4.1 Roughness measurement AM process is known to create a roughness which depends on the inclination of the surface in relation with the building orientation [5]. The roughness of an upskin surface with already molten material underneath is smaller than that of a downskin surface that has an unfused powder bed underneath.…”

“…Metal AM technologies also offers the possibility of building hybrid molds [4,5,6], where an additively manufactured portion of the insert is built over of a prefabricated mold block. This means that only the parts were AM is required are manufactured using laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) [7], saving money by reducing the expensive manufacturing time (cf.…”

“…The cooling time of the wax patterns constitutes a large portion in cycle time. Nowadays, the conformal cooling channel (CCC) was incorporated in the wax injection mold to improve the cooling efficiency of the wax patterns in terms of uniform cooling during the cooling stage [1]. Low-pressure wax injection molding is one of the most widely used approaches for producing wax patterns, which can be used for investment casting [2] to manufacture metal components with intricate shapes [3].…”
